Negative Nancys

One of my favourite TV shows, Sherlock, has just finished airing it’s fantastic fourth series. I thought it was superb and lots of people enjoyed it too. But as ever the internet was full of people moaning about it.
It’s odd how negative our world has become, especially on social media. Why do people feel the need to focus on the negatives and spend so much of their online life complaining about things? I find it a strange and miserable way of living.
It’s all social media’s fault of course. Before Twitter, Facebook and co I think people were more positive about things. If you didn’t like something you might mention it at the time but only the few people you happened to be with would hear it. Social media really has a lot to answer for- immediate thoughts and unchecked news are ruining the world politically.
I imagine a different state of affairs. What if everyone only talked about the stuff they liked? It would be better for them mentally and indeed everyone else. The good stuff would rightly be lorded. The bad stuff would vanish completely because no-one would talk about it. It would make the world a much happier place.
I mentioned this idea on Twitter and someone replied to me saying ‘if we don’t talk about the negative, nothing would change’. I don’t believe that though. You can make your opinion heard just as much by NOT talking about things. If your show/film/politics/other creation isn’t talked about at all in a positive world then you know people don’t like it. Therefore you must change your ideas.
Obviously this is simple when it comes to TV shows etc but with politics it’s more complicated. I still think generally it would work simply not talking about the things you don’t like. Few policies are changed because they are unpopular. With politics your vote is your opinion. I accept though that in some circumstances there’s a need to criticise but it’s much better to do this for just the big things rather than for everything.
I hate the negative world we now live in. People being negative caused the UK to leave the EU, which I still believe was a huge mistake. I suspect it has a lot to do with why Donald Trump was elected too. As much as I love social media the constant negativity grinds you down. I often find myself unfollowing people who I like in real life because they’re online life is poison.
Next time you think about being a Negative Nancy online, consider what good it will actually do. Wouldn’t it be better to lose the negativity and say something positive instead?
